Traveling through space

Untitled

Power-walking down icy sidewalks, bundled up in my thickest wool coat, it’s hard to believe I was in California not too long ago. Although there’s much that I miss about the West Coast, it feels good to be back home in New York. And it was especially lovely to come back to a mail box full of letters and cards!

Souvenirs from Emily’s Iceland trip: a map postcard, a found vintage landscape photograph of a village called Kirkjubæjarklaustur, and a delicate handmade ceramic cup. Ah, she knows me so well!

My talented friend Orion made this illustrated story book in Kunming. When his parcel arrived in New York, I held the book in my hands and started re-remembering Yunnan.

There was one day Taurin, Orion, and I went to eat a bowl of chicken noodle soup together. I silently followed Orion, starting to feel hangry (so hungry that you start feeling angry)–I must have been in the studio working all day.

The noodle shop had only one thing on the menu and a self-serve station with all the best fixings–all the chopped scallions, minced garlic, and hot pepper paste that you could ever want. I piled a mound of toppings on my bowl of soup and sat on a plastic stool on the sidewalk. No one talked. We just dove into that bowl and slurped away, with huge smiles on our faces.

Rina’s package was such a wonderful surprise on a cold, cold day! I love the tiny Japanese incense and paper goodies.

All the letters really do travel through space…

Charlotte hid a collection of pretty stamps in a secret pouch on the envelope. Oh, that Russian stamp! I really love stylized propaganda paper goodies.

Johanna’s handprinted zine, Colletion #1, arrived from Berlin! And psst, she just finished printing Colletion #2.

Shugo Tokumaru’s new stop motion music video is mesmerizing.

I walked around the snow covered Central Park on Saturday with my film camera. All the rolls expired in the ’80s and ’90s, so who knows how/if these shots will turn out? I can’t wait to get the rolls developed this week!

Do you remember how short my hair used to be? I’m trying to grow it out this year.

P.S. Gabriela invited me to do an interview for Vociferous magazine. I talk about my childhood, travels, current projects, and a bit about my plans for this year. She asked me such wonderful questions, I almost started writing an essay.

Which reminds me, I’m slowly doing some spring cleaning and reorganizing around the blog. I just added a couple more places on my Adventure Map.

Handmade Black Friday (Thanksgiving Part II)

Today was one of the most productive yet laid back days at home. It was a welcome change, as I have been juggling a hectic work/study schedule followed by some delightfully indulgent holiday festivities. I have lots of (food) photos from my brother’s visit this weekend, as well as some of lovely incoming snail mail inspiration to share with you.

My brother, James, and I enjoyed strolling through the Central Park on a beautiful day. We only ventured out of the park area to eat some French macarons!

Salty caramel macaron from Laduree just might be my favorite. I wanted to eat three more.

Black Friday on Fifth Avenue! I’m fairly sure we retreated back towards the park after a block or two of barely moving.

I always spot those Nuts 4 Nuts carts, and they always smell like dark caramel!

In support of handmade and vintage things on Black Friday, we stopped by the opening night of the Brooklyn Night Bazaar.

I participated in Kelly Zarb’s Paper Love Swap. I was paired with Kat from The Craft Bureau. Her package arrived in my mail box, full of wonderful paper goodies. It was really fun putting together a package for Kat, and I am excited for her to receive it soon!

Kat sent me some lovely patterned paper, tiny fabric rosette, sparkly ribbons, postcards from London, and so much more.

P.S. Inspired by the paper swap and as a small gesture of thanks to you (yes, you!), I am hosting a giveaway on my blog. The details are here, and the giveaway is open to all readers.

Paperlove Giveaway!

Untitled

I can hardly believe I have been blogging on Maps and Fragments for nearly four years now. Thank you for accompanying me on these journeys near and far, and allowing me to consistently have this little space and be a part of a growing creative community.

Just in time for the upcoming holidays and end of the year, I wanted to host a small giveaway. It includes one of the first copies of my Shanghai photo zine and a handmade pouch from Yunnan. During a trip to Dali, I met a tiny old lady sitting on the steps of a closed store with a big bag of colorful fabric scraps. She was squinting, hand-sewing these geometric patterns onto small pouches. I saved this triangle pattern pouch for you:

The giveaway includes: my original Floating Island photo zine, two colorful polkadot envelopes, a floral stationary paper pack, a kitten stationary set (8 sheets and 4 envelopes), loose sheets of sheer origami paper with diagonal stripes, three polaroid postcards of my photographs, a handmade triangle pouch from Dali, and of course, a little surprise (maybe something else handmade by me or something from New York City).

Everything goes to one randomly chosen winner.

You only have to do two things:
1) Be a Maps and Fragments follower. It can be on Google readerTwitterBloglovin’, Facebook, etc.
2) Leave a comment with a way for me to contact you.

The giveaway will be open until Dec. 9th, and the winners will be announced shortly after. The giveaway is now closed.

The randomly chosen winner is comment #14, Nekoblog.

Good luck, and thanks, again!
