On this side of the border / A weekend roadtrip to Monterrey

This weekend Taurin and I attended MtyMx**–a three-day music and art festival/exchange in Monterrey. It was held at a dusty abandoned drive-in theater surrounded by mountains. I slept in tent city, not realizing the severity of the desert wind and of course, I had no idea I would be sleeping in a U.S. military tent with a (probably dead) soldier’s name written on it in sharpie. But we saw some beautiful sunsets these past few nights. And the sloppy organization made the festival all the more intimate and I got to meet some really great people I hope to stay in touch with (p.s. I’ll try to make a post about Mexican artists and musicians that I’ve discovered these past few weeks).

It’s good to be back in Mexico City. I woke up warm in my newly cleaned apartment (the cleaning lady finally came!). Taurin is cooking some eggplants in the kitchen and I think it’s time for dinner..

**Many Mexican musicians/artists/audience cannot make it across the border to attend American music festivals (such as SXSW) because of U.S. border restrictions. MtyMx organizer Todd P had great plans for this festival–to bring SXSW musicians to Monterrey, feature local acts from Mexico, and provide a venue for cross-cultural exchange. Not everything fell into place logistically and border crossing was challenging even for those coming from the U.S. During the festival I was interviewed by the reporter from New York Times and I think he wrote a fair article about MtyMx.

!! That picture of you and Taurin. This sounds like such a good adventure.

And good call! I have plenty of pasta! What happened was I tried to make noodle soup, but I only wanted to make half, and I poured all the spicy powder in the first batch because I was sort of drunk. The second batch turned out very bland. :/

I really like that photo of the mini super, the colors are so dark and full of shadow.
