Handmade map envelopes & organic kimchi

The days following a trip outside of town are usually quite hectic. I’ve been putting aside some time to write letters and prepare packages for some outgoing snail mail.

a1
The “stamp gluing station” at the local post office and a letter for Cristy covered in pretty bird stamps.

The pocket camera for Celsy in a bubble-wrap sleeve, ready to be wrapped up!

a3
Polka-dot fabric tape, a map of Kunming, and my favorite kitty pen

I’m so happy about the template I made for these tiny envelopes, especially because I get to use my map collection. I can’t wait for all my mail to arrive at their destinations!

I’ve been eating out a little too much, so we placed an order for a 5kg box of organic vegetables. As soon as I saw daikon radish and napa cabbage in the mix, I got really excited about making some kimchi.

Julienned carrots, daikon radish, green onions, and homemade pepper flakes (not quite kochukaru).

The finished batch of mak kimchi. I was telling my mom about it today, and she was really happy I remembered the recipe.

Taurin made a huge pot of soup with fava beans, carrots, eggplants, and zucchini.

Served with a carefully poached egg and chopped up coriander.

Mmm, kimchi! Yours looks quite colourful! My last batch turned out pretty bad for some reason, but fortunately, I found some decent kimchi at the grocery store – whew! What’s your recipe?

Actually, my nappa cabbage kimchi didn’t turn out as great as my daikon kimchi. My mom says it’s all in the initial salting process.. I’ll try the cabbage again and post the recipe then!

That’s a good thing to know (about the salting). The type/amount of salt is the only thing I did differently on the bad batch. I look forward to seeing your recipe =)

Thank you! I remember I attended a workshop on mail art when I was just a wee pre-teen. I used to love doing collages on envelopes.

You and Taurin are so creative in your cooking! I’m cooking for myself for the first time here and I can’t say it’s not stressful. I just end up eating a lot of stir-fry, haha. Your envelopes also look so darling. I’ve bought a couple postcards and haven’t gotten around to posting them yet, how lazy. Take care, xx

Stir-fries are crucial! Actually, I haven’t made any stir-fry here because I can’t figure out the wok. Any time I try to wok fry anything, my food burns because I don’t use enough oil. I don’t like cooking with so much oil though!! So I’m stuck with soups, pastas, noodles, and salads for the most part. xx
