I was just in San Francisco a few days ago, enamored with the Bay Area, and unable to imagine life without so much nature and delicious food. I suppose New York has its way of sweeping you off your feet, but looking at the photos makes me all the more excited about my growing connection to the west coast.
Banana cream tart from Tartine: flaky pastry coated in dark chocolate with caramel, banana pastry cream, and lightly sweetened cream, topped with chocolate shavings and powder sugar.
Three scoops at Humphry Slocombe: secret breakfast (bourbon + cornflakes), bluebottle vietnamese coffee, malted dulce de leche. I need the recipe book!
Mission Chinese Food was my first meal, literally minutes after landing at SFO! It was delicious and very much American without witholding the spice.
We ordered chilled buckwheat noodles with tea-smoked eel, mouth-wateringly spicy kungpao pastrami (my favorite), sizzling cumin lamb, and beers.
Remnants of Dia de los Muertos festivities.
Taurin’s baconified bloody mary and my basil gimlet at Chop Bar (Oakland).
Basil gimlet: crop organic cucumber vodka, basil, St. Germain elderflower liqueur & lime juice.
I baked some Milk Bar compost cookies for Taurin and his housemates, and felt zero guilt about munching on potato chips in the morning. The cookie is named for its assortment of ingredients, including chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, coffee grounds, graham cracker crust, crushed pretzels, and potato chips. Here’s the recipe!
Thanks to Kelly’s recommendation, I made a trip over to Japantown. I was mostly really curious about American versions of the 100 yen shop.
We got some adorable bento boxes for $1.50 at Daiso. Taurin wants to turn them into mini synthesizers, which would be really fun.
We have a Kinokuniya in New York, too, and it’s a dangerous place for your wallet! I’ve got my eyes on some of these sewing books…
Last but not least, I got a bottle of Calpico and Taurin got his canned Oicha fix. I remember when I was a kid, my younger brother and I thought that mixing milk and sprite would yield Calpico..
And I just had to include these photos of me and Taurin taken at a friends’ wedding in Virginia!

November 17, 2012 at 2:13 amI love your pictures so much Sewon! It’s a riddle to me how you make the colors shine so much… I enjoy every single one of your shots but the last one of NY is so impressive! 1.50 for a Bento box is pretty aweome too! …but what does he (Taurin) mean with “mini sythesizers”?! I’m really curious 😉 .. and the persimmons make me miss Japan so much!! You look so elegant on the pictures with Taurin (whose smile is awesome!)

November 18, 2012 at 2:27 pmGosh I so love these pictures Sewon – the food looks so delicious and those persimmon fruits always remind me of my grandma – she eats so much of those fruits when they are in season!

November 18, 2012 at 9:04 pmI really like your haircut. I thought about getting short but always tend to back out. The purple complements your skin tone. 🙂
I’ll add your blog to my blogroll so you can get more traffic.
I like San Fran. I went there when it was freezing cold, though. =/

November 21, 2012 at 5:46 amglad you’re enjoying California! how’d you like the Daiso? Personally I’ve found that the Irvine Daiso is much better than the San Diego one, but I’ve yet to see the one in San Fran!

November 24, 2012 at 12:11 pmOh, I am DROOLING over all the delicious food pictures you’ve taken. I wish there was a Kinokuniya in my city. although, maybe it’s best there isn’t, because I would probably be broke all the time.
How I miss those 100 yen shops! ) : very convenient we have dollar stores in the U.S. but it’s not the same!
Taurin is going to tern a bento box into a mini synthesizer? how can that be done!? haha.
