I’m such a quiet person, I always thought if I ever made music, I would strum my wooden ukulele and write soft folk songs. But in my short musical stint during college, I found myself (terribly) playing power chords on an electric flying-V to drum beats on my vintage Casio. My friend Chris and I (a.k.a. The Pathetic Fallacy) only wrote dance tunes strictly for parties–our set-up complete with bubble machines, sequin tops, pastel color themes, and wild dancing. Around then, I also hosted a weekly radio show called Populuxe, which was a perfect excuse to acquire too many hi-nrg and italo disco albums.
Our very own, The Pathetic Fallacy double-track on shimmery casette tapes, thanks to Arthur Thompson.
Did you see her moon walking? Kim Wan Sun was a Korean dancing queen in the 80s.
Despite an onset of musical-laziness, I’m still a sucker for upbeat dance tunes with heavy drum beats and female vocals, especially the fist-pumping-worthy angsty ones with repetitive chorus lines. Lately, I’ve been tempted to grab the Florence + The Machine tickets or record a song myself. So when my friend Elisa suggested going to a show at the Secret Project Robot and mentioned something about a female solo set, I didn’t even think twice. I just grabbed my bag and my camera, and we headed out to Bushwick.
We stopped by an exhibit closing at the Living Gallery, ate some tacos al pastor, and caught Ñaka Ñaka and Selma Oxor. Oddly enough, I kept thinking that Selma Oxor looked really familiar. Then I remembered that I took photos of her set when I was at a Ritualz show in 2010, back when I lived in Mexico City. Coincidentally, Ritualz recently messaged me about his show in San Francisco, and Taurin made it out there.
Maybe it’s because it was the first place, but some of my favorite memories and people are associated with Mexico City. It was certainly a place of many beginnings. Now that these worlds are colliding, I am looking forward to seeing more of my friends in unexpected corners (or perhaps, urban centers) of the world.

Mission Chinese Food in New York! It took me and Emily about 2.5 hours to get a table on a Friday evening. We ordered the thrice cooked bacon with Shanghainese rice cakes + the mapo tofu with pork shoulder and heapings of sichuan pepper. Super 麻辣!
Good night, and happy Friday!

December 9, 2012 at 3:59 pmAh yeah, I’m still not too used to these long waits. I don’t think I could have withstood the wait without the galleries nearby. 😛
