Daily Life Food Inspiration New York

Cooking with the Breakfast Bachelor!

I am getting so excited about spring and all the wonderful warm weather activities to come–picnics, potlucks, flea markets, rooftop hangouts, long walks, mini dresses, and sandals.

Alexander, the dashing young cook behind Breakfast Bachelor, invited me for an evening of pizza-making in his lovely kitchen. It was so much fun chatting about our love of food and the city, I hardly realized the clock was ticking.

“Some people like to paint pictures, or do gardening, or build a boat… Other people get a tremendous pleasure out of the kitchen, because cooking is just as creative and imaginative an activity as drawing, or wood carving, or music.” – Julia Child

Balsamic vinaigrette sautéed radicchio tossed with ripe bartlett pears

Piled on radicchio, pears, and goat milk capricho de cabra!

The second one is crushed red pepper tomato sauce, cremini mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil. Yum!

A few months ago, I managed to finish printing and binding my little photo zine, right before I left Yunnan. These zines have traveled with me through Shanghai, Virginia, and now New York. I find such joy in preparing small packages and sending off my zines to friends and familiar strangers all around the world. It’s so strange to see that I only have just a handful of copies left. I wonder where they’ll travel to next.

On a related note, I’m hoping to write a short tutorial for those of you hoping to delve into independently publishing digital zines. I know how confusing the process can be at first, but it’s just wonderful to see memories and ideas become tangible.

*Last photo of my zine is by Lisa, who has a keen eye for capturing details

I’m actually really curious about how you go about making your printed zines! Do you print and bind them from home or do you send them off to a printer to do the job?

For beautifully printed color zines, it’s definitely worthwhile to connect with a small print shop with the right equipment, paper, and ink. The quality difference is huge! As for binding, it really depends on how many editions I’m printing. 🙂

your new hair looks really lovely, Sewon!
i’m really really excited about all the upcoming picknicks and everything as well. it’s weird how fast the weather changed this year (from around -15C 6 weeks ago to +20C now), but i enjoy it a lot. and i’m jealous you speak Korean! i’ve made quite some Korean friends while being an exchange student, and afterwards i studied it a liiittle bit (so i can read signs when i finally travel to Korea one day), but i really don’t know more than how to read the alphabet / prenounce words, how to write 바나나 and i can sing along with (the whole!) 뽀뽀뽀-tv tune. and properly use ㅋ;) i think it’s very interesting – especially the whole theory about how the characters became the way they look like.

I always get a little surprised whenever I leave a restaurant after dinner and it’s perfectly warm outside. Ah, I’m so excited for long, warm summer days. Aw, 뽀뽀뽀-tv tune!! That’s so cute. 🙂 Read and writing are good foundations for learning the language. Keep it up, Marlou!

    Hi SeWon!
thank you for your lovely comments about my trip!
You’re new haircut looks really stylish! I feel that you are the kind of person who will look good, no matter what haircut you have. : )
it seems that a lot of my friends are becoming bolder, and they are also trying out short-hair styles.
I prefer my hair to be short, actually.
Interesting, a pear pizza? I’m not too familiar with pears on pizza, but it might be yummy!
Oh, I bet you find lot of interesting nick-nacks and such in New York flea markets
(probably has more variety compared to the ones I go to…)
Such a pretty song (I love the piano in it). thanks for sharing! I feel really lucky to have one of your zines.
It inspires me, and keeps my dreams of traveling alive!
    thank you SeWon

Wow those pizzas look super yummy! I like the sound of all of them but I’m not keen on goats milk/cheese so I’d probably swap it for a bit of mozzarella! Love your pictures of the trees/flowers- how beautiful. I’d totally blow them up and make them into prints!
